When enrollment in CHAMPVA is confirmed, the beneficiary receives a package which includes his or her CHAMPVA identification card, the CHAMPVA Handbook, forms and brochures. While not the final word on VA policies, the handbook is a valuable guide and reference for the veteran sponsor and his or her family.
The CHAMPVA Handbook presents such important facts about the program as:
- CHAMPVA eligibility requirements
- Covered and non-covered services
- Claim filing instructions
- Tips on identifying health insurance fraud
- How to appeal a denied CHAMPVA claim
- Glossary of CHAMPVA terms
If you need to quickly look up an aspect of the program, refer to your handbook. Pages and sections are color-coded so it is easy to find what you need. Print is large for easy reading. When you see a word in a green highlight, that means you can look up that term in the glossary.
The CHAMPVA handbook is only a guide. Please contact the VA Health Administration Center, visit the official CHAMPVA website and/or refer to the official Policy Manual (available online) for the authoritative word.
The CHAMPVA Handbook is not republished each year. If there are any policy changes you need to be aware of, the Department of Veterans Affairs will send you a notice in the mail and ask you to attach it to your handbook.
